Tiffany Style Table Lamps
Tiffany Style Table Lamps Are Still As Popular As Ever
It has always been thought that Lewis Comfort Tiffany, of the famous Tiffany jewellery store dynasty, developed the Tiffany style table lamps but it was actually Clara Driscoll who was the master designer behind this beautiful and timeless lighting fixture. Tiffany produced the lamps, contributed some of his own designs and the company continues to produce the lamps up to the present day. While Clara conceived the idea and was responsible for putting it into production Lewis, a designer of stained glass windows, helped to make it a wildly popular fixture in the homes of those that could afford it.
The first Tiffany lamp was introduced in 1899, a heavy bronze base topped by a leaded glass shade embellished with patterns of nautilus, dragonfly and Tyler scroll. These glass table lamps are considered part of the Art Nouveau movement. Lewis Tiffany was an admirer of Japanese art, which emphasizes the beauty of nature. Thus, many Tiffany lamps feature dragonflies, butterflies, vines, flowers and other stunning gifts from the forest.
Tiffany style table lamps can be elaborate or simple, filled with vibrant color or themed with just two or three colors that complement and contrast with each other. Once you see the difference between the leaded glass of a true Tiffany and an imitation you’ll realize why authentic versions are highly prized over copies, even the most beautifully rendered ones. The glow of the rich colors in leaded glass when illuminated by light bulbs or by the passing rays of natural sunlight can’t be duplicated with any other material.
Set the Right Mood with Tiffany Style Table Lamps
Many people like to use these glass table lamps in the bedroom because of the romantic lighting they throw off but they are just as effective for creating a mood of sophistication and elegance in other rooms as well.
The right Tiffany lamp goes with nearly any decorating scheme from modern to antique, contemporary or traditional. It is an ageless design with elegant style whose colors complement any furniture, wall color or window treatment. Table lamps are 18-36” high with shade sizes 14-24”. They use one to three bulbs of 40-100 watts to accommodate any lighting requirements.
You may have seen only a couple of Tiffany style table lamps and be under the impression that there are only a couple of choices but you would be mistaken. There are hundreds of types and styles of Tiffany lamps! Since the lamp shades are basically geometric shapes, there is a nearly endless choice of variations of triangles, squares, rectangles and circles. These shapes make use of various designs such as scallops, sharp angles or soft curves combined with classic designs and exquisite craftsmanship.

No matter what type of decorating scheme you have in your home, a Tiffany lamp will fit right in. Whether your home is a Victorian hideaway, a riot of Art Deco jubilance or a study in the spare, clean lines of futuristic ambiance, Tiffany style table lamps will not only complement your décor, it will lend a flawless beauty with its timeless elegance tinged with tasteful frivolity.
